Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said the Venezuelan and United States governments have been in touch for months during an appearance on a State Television broadcast from La Guaira, north of Caracas, on Tuesday, despite Venezuela having officially cut diplomatic ties with the US in January.
"I confirm that for months there have been contacts between senior officials from Donald Trump's government and from the Bolivarian government over which I preside - with my express and direct permission," he said. "To normalize and resolve this conflict."
Maduro added, "We are always prepared for dialogue, to deal, to resolve, to find solutions, always."
Venezuela cut diplomatic ties with the United States over its support for Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, who declared himself president in January and called Maduro's government illegitimate, causing a political crisis in the country.
