About the chant:
We tend to treasure all kinds of music at Christmastime. Yet we rarely look back as far as the Medieval period for our seasonal melodies. If we do explore Christmas music of distant times, we are likely to find meaningful treasures, including a chant called Puer natus est nobis, it comes from a style of medieval sacred singing called Plainchant (better known as Gregorian Chant). Plainchant melodies have an unknown chronological origin, but they were passed along through oral transmission and widely used in church liturgy until they began to be recorded in manuscripts. They were first written down around the 9th century on parchment (animal skin) using the earliest systems of Western musical notation, starting with squiggly symbols (neumes) that indicated the general curve of the melodies and, later, with square and diamond-shaped notes (black notation) placed on the new-fangled grid of lines that we call a musical staff.
