Quick Tip: The Difference Between Nitrided & Chrome-Lined Barrels

Quick Tip: The Difference Between Nitrided & Chrome-Lined Barrels Scenario: You're picking out a barrel for your new AR-15 rifle build. You discover you have a choice between a chrome-lined or a nitrided barrel. So which is better? Brownells Firearm Support Technician Caleb Savant sorts it out for us. Both finishes provide excellent corrosion protection, reduced bore wear, and extended barrel life. Chrome lining is the older process and is better suited to full-auto and high-volume semi-auto fire because it provides higher heat and friction resistance. Nitriding, also called Melonite and QPQ, is easier to apply, which helps keep barrel price down. Depending on the type of shooting you plan to do with your new Dream Gun™, either one will give you excellent service.
