Protesters demanding the release of former English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson faced off with police in London on Saturday, with mounted police forcing back the crowd as they tried to break police lines and climb over barricades.
Demonstrators chanted “We want Tommy out” and “Paedo scum off our streets,” the latter in reference to the sexual grooming gang whose trial Robinson live streamed in May 2018, resulting in his imprisonment on contempt charges. The Old Bailey ruled that his Facebook Live video of defendants had breached reporting restrictions and jeopardised the trial.
The former EDL leader was originally jailed for 13 months on the day of the Facebook broadcast, but was released two months into his sentence after winning his appeal. The case was then referred to the Attorney General Geoffrey Cox who opted to bring fresh proceedings against him, which resulted in Robinson's conviction for a further nine months.
