Chernobyl and Fukushima — nuclear accidents described in a simple way

Chernobyl and Fukushima — nuclear accidents described in a simple way Thanks to the new HBO series the accident in Chernobyl is trending again. I won’t talk about the series itself, what they did right and what they did wrong.

Instead I’d like to compare the events in Chernobyl and Fukushima. These disasters are 25 years and half a world apart. I’ll explain what happened in plain words and try to find some similarities.

I’d like to apologise in advance, to the experts or those related to the topic. I’ll try to put complicated things the easiest way possible. I do know the terms like operative reactivity margin, subcritical state, but I’ll skip that science in my explanation.
