University is a quite a step up from high school and it can be overwhelming for some. In this video I share some tips on how to succeed in University and make sure to leave with what you went there to work for...for most people, that is a degree in order to get a good paying job. My tips are: 1. Question your degree.
Do some research into your degree and figure out if it will get you a job when you finish. There is high unemployment rate in South Africa and certain industries are either extremely competitive or do not have decent opportunities for graduates. However, there are other careers out there that pay very well and are in demand. If you are not strategic about your career choices you will have a very tough time with job hunting when you graduate.
2. Stay up to date with your academics.
Most of the advice I have shared regarding academics is centred around making sure you stay up to date as much as you can. Going for lecures, attending your labs/tutorials, etc. Extra time with your tutors and lecturers, etc. The most you see yourself more than a week behind, chances of you catching up before the end of the semester are very slim.
3. Schedule your life.
In line with the previous tip, I used Google calendar to create a daily time table for myself...not only did it have my lectures and lab session, but along with tests, exams, meetings, and other appointments related to my side hustles. This made it easy to plan my academics and ensure that I can juggle everything properly without crashing.
4. Make peer pressure work for you.
Despite how independent you think you are, your friends have a significant impact on your life more than you may realise. Surround yourself with good energy and you will also radiate good energy. If you are surrounded by negative energy, these are the type of people who will encourage you to do bad things and will disappear when you need them the most.
5. Take care of your mental health.
University can cause depression and it can be triggered by a variety of factors which may include being lonely (if you studying in a foreign place of you don't have many friends), overwhelming academic workload, being broke, being single, lack of sleep, etc.
