We can use models, such as a table, to compare customary units of liquid volume. Liquid volume is the measure of the space that a liquid occupies (uses). Some basic units used for measuring liquid volume are gallons, half gallons, quarts, pints, and cups. One gallon is 2 times as much as one-half gallon. One half-gallon is 2 times as much as 1 quart. 1 quart is 2 times as much as 1 pint, 1 pint is 2 times as much as 1 cup. We can use the pattern of twos to help us if we don't have a liquid volume chart (just make sure to include half-gallons or the pattern of twos won't work). Fluid ounces are different than ounces because an ounce is a customary unit used to measure weight and a "fluid ounce" is a customary unit used to measure liquid volume, the measure of space that a liquid occupies. We compare liquid volume using the symbols for greater than, less than, or equal to. We solve three word problems that involve customary units of liquid volume. Also, you may hear Lola snoring, sorry!
