The Uniqueness of Malaysian Batik

The Uniqueness of Malaysian Batik We are Group 7 from Bachelor of Psychology, University of Cyberjaya.

In this assignment, the topic that we have chosen is the uniqueness of Malaysian batik. Batik is a method of wax-resist dyeing applied to the entire fabric. The reason why we choose batik as the symbol of Malaysia is because Malaysian batik are now has been declared by the Malaysian government as the national dress. Malaysian batik can be found in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Johor, however they have their own uniqueness that can be told apart by its design.

Malaysian batik is considered rare as most of the designs painted on the batik are only leaves and flower as Islam has forbid using animal as a decoration. There are also abstract and geometric designs that are popularly used in Malaysian batik. The techniques used for designing the Malaysian batik are quite unique from the Indonesian Javanese batik. The pattern for Malaysian batik are usually enormous and simpler, almost never uses canting to create complex patterns and depends mostly on the uses of brush painting method to apply colours and patterns on the fabrics.

There are four techniques used in designing Malaysian batik which are hand-drawn batik, tie-dye batik, screen printing and block-printing batik. By completing this project, we hope that batik is more appreciated by the newer generation and the heritage of batik will never fades within time.
