Sometimes the mountains seem like they stretch for ever... In Fiordland we are often surrounded by a vast landscape of snow capped tops.

On the ground a single peak may rise endlessly into the sky. It is easy to feel defeated by the enormity of such an obstacle.

It is the many that will walk away untested and the few that heed the call of the summit. These few distinguish themselves as true warriors of the wilderness, as Bushmen.

From the air white pinnacles stretch beyond view. We pass in seconds landscapes that would otherwise take days to travers. For this reason we feel like cheats knowing too well the sore legs and hard slog it would take to otherwise travel the same distance. We are always grateful however for the ease of helicopters and the skilled pilots who fly them.

In this job it’s never your average commute to work. But the Fiordland mountains are always one of my favourites.

ever...
