New York blanketed by heavy snow as early winter storm pummels

About 40 million people are under some kind of winter weather alert as heavy snowfall covers the Northeast and a treacherous storm drenches much of the West Coast. More than 800 flights to or from US airports have been canceled for Monday and 6,000 flights have been delayed, according to FlightAware.com.
