Theory Of Steering Theory of Steering

The ship is steered by turning the rudder to port or starboard side. The steering gear system turns the rudder to the required angle.

Depending on the rudder angle a lateral force is exerted on the ship at the aft end of the ship. The lateral force acts towards starboard side, when the rudder is turned to port. This turns the ship’s head to port side. Similiarly, when the rudder is turned to starboard, the ship turns to starboard side.
