ABSTRACT
Urban life and city nature in three dimensions. That is the main concept of SLA, Chartier Dalix Architectes and Jacques Ferrier Architecture’s winning project in the international mega competition Reinventer Paris. Here the team won one of the competition’s central projects: Ternes-Villiers. The project offers a distinctive green transformation of a highly strategic spot in Paris: The Parisian ring-road, Boulevard Périphérique. The winning project puts a 5,000 m2 urban roof deck across the Boulevard Périphérique and ties the city together with its suburbs. In this new intermediate area, you will find a free arrangement of housing and office buildings and an abundance of nature-filled public spaces.
The project combines nature-based ecosystem services, fully climate-adapted urban spaces and new social meeting places with underground parking, pedestrian-friendly connections and large roof terraces. The buildings are linked at roof level where you, among other things, will find the first Parisian tea plantation.
In the Multi-Layered City you will find varied city nature in both public spaces, on facades and on roofs. This is city nature that filters, cleans and stores rainwater, catches air pollutants and provide aesthetic and sensory nature experiences around a multitude of uses.
"The project is a rethinking of both urban life and city nature in the Parisian periphery. By working with city nature and urban life as complete ecosystems we can create new urban experiences and brand-new green contexts in an otherwise very grey and traffic-congested part of Paris. The project not only offers green attractions at street level but lifts urban life and city nature high over Paris’ facades and roofs, which adds a whole new dimension to what it means to live and work in Paris," says partner in SLA Rasmus Astrup.
Rasmus Astrup is a partner and design principal of SLA, a renowned Danish landscape architecture consultancy. SLA’s projects have a strong emphasis on biodiversity, sustainability, ecosystem services and the transformative potential of landscape. Rasmus Astrup leads SLA’s biggest international projects and currently works in the US, China, the Middle East and Paris. Since 2015, Rasmus has been partner-in-charge for SLA’s ongoing work with the winning entry for the Reinventer Paris Competition, The Multi-Layered City, which SLA designed in collaboration with Chartier Dalix Architectes and Jacques Ferrier Architecture.
Since its founding in 2008 by Frédéric Chartier and Pascale Dalix, the ChartierDalix office has delivered some fifteen buildings. Noticed at several international competitions, it was awarded a number of prizes. Laureate in 2016 of the international Réinventer-Paris competition for the Ternes-Villiers site and in 2017 with the Nouvelle AOM (Franklin Azzi Architecture and Hardel & Le Bihan Architectes) for the project “Demain Montparnasse”. The office masters a broad range of commissions and programs, both public, such as the La Courneuve train station of the Grand Paris Express, and private, notably several projects involving commercial properties, and hotels. For the last several years, the research department of the office has undertaken work on the integration of the biosphere in architecture. This theme was the inspiration for the project called “Architecture and Biodiversity: Imagining a new urban ecosystem,” which was selected under the framework of the request for proposals for the FAIRE project, launched by the Pavillon de l’Arsenal.
