HSCI 312 Group 7 - Female Sex Workers and Mental Health (S.W.E.E.T.)

HSCI 312 Group 7 - Female Sex Workers and Mental Health (S.W.E.E.T.) Located in the heart of the Downtown Eastside (DTES), S.W.E.E.T operates out of Carnegie Community centre — a space which is a recognizable and familiar environment for female sex workers, our targeted at risk population. This population includes, but is not limited to, female sex workers who identify as: Indigenous, Metis, Inuit, other minorities and ethnocultural groups, persons who use drugs (PWUD), street youths and homeless, and sexual (LGBTTQQIAAP2S+) and gender (Trans/Two-Spirit/Femme/Non-binary/Gender-diverse) minorities. Aiming to promote better mental health practices and improve overall well-being, S.W.E.E.T strives to address the disparities faced by this community while promoting mental health, self-efficacy, and self esteem. Initiating the N.O.N. S.L.I.P. pilot program, S.W.E.E.T. has paired with community and professional services, such as counselling and diagnostic assessment, to foster mental health support at the community level. S.W.E.E.T. involves members of this community in the engagement of programs, discussions, and activities; either through indirect (participatory) or direct (peer-lead) involvement. Our organization encourages members of this community (FSW) to lead group discussions, engage in numerous activities (art and fitness programs), and attend community teaching nights (seminars) which will engage the public, law enforcement, and the health care system. Our organization’s objectives will ensure the disproportionate health inequities affecting at-risk populations in Vancouver’s DTES are addressed. Our team works to create safe and supportive spaces for womxn in the sex work community, to develop skills and support networks at both individual and community levels.
