How and when to buy a refrigerator - buying guide

Buying a refrigerator is a major purchase. Therefore weighing all your options before purchasing a new stainless steel refrigerator is the best way to start.

The best times to buy are during the big shopping holidays when discounts are the greatest. February, May, July, September and November are great discount months.

Before getting too deep in research, it is best to measure the space available for your new refrgerator. Measure the width and height of the opening to be sure your new appliance will FIT.

Then you need to decide the depth of the new refrigerator. You have two possible options. You can choose between regular depth which stick out in the opening about 9 inches from the face of the cabinets or the edge of the counter, Or you could opt for counter DEPTH which would be about flush with your cabinetry. That look is cleaner but it sacrifices interior space. So you have a trade-off.

The next choice is FREEZER LOCATION. Simply put, the next decision is a top freezer, bottom freezer or side freezer orientation. This is more about preferences but make a difference in which refrigerator you will buy.

Then, your next choice is HOW MANY DOORS do you want? Two doors up to fiver or even more. Many options here.

In the exterior FINISHES, you have the tried and true stainless steel or white finishes. But there are a host of options here as well. One note of caution: if you buy black stainless steel and scratch it, the scratch will be fairly evident as the underlying material will be quite evident.

Because of the pursuit of efficiency and the availability so many bells and whistles in the FEATURES and fancy options, REPAIRS will be likely. It is important to have a repair place in mind as the big box stores do not provide in-house service.
If you are interested in reliability, then it is a good idea to research the number of repairs for a particular make or model divided by the number of sales of that make or model. That will give you a statistic of what you chances are of having to get a repair.
