For a long time, us football fans thought we knew what a “catch” was: If the ball was in your hands and you didn’t drop or fumble it, then congratulations! You completed the process of a catch!
But unfortunately, the “catch” rule in the NFL rulebook has never really made sense. Over the decades, we saw a few questionable catch and non-catch rulings. But only in the 21st century have we seen more horrific rulings on what a catch IS or ISN’T.
The NFL has taken action in more ways than one when it comes to avoiding controversial rulings: Coach’s challenges, replay systems and more clear definitions of what a “catch" actually is. Hopefully, we’ll have a full understanding of a “catch” one day.
In the meantime, we’re looking at seven instances of questionable catch rulings that have no right or wrong answer; ones that cause so much debate to the point where we’ll never be able to come to an agreement on them.
So, let’s get right to it!
