Clearly known most for its introduction of Expedition Lands, Battle for Zendikar has been massively opened. For a long time, cards other than Gideon, Ally of Zendikar and Ulamog, the Ceasless Hunger have held little value. Because fetch lands are not legal in Pioneer Format, people are scrambling to find the next-best lands to fill their decks. Will Battle for Zendikar erupt with new value as this ground-breaking format develops, or will it remain a landfill of could-have-been landfall cards? In this episode, Jake and Joel go over the cards in Battle for Zendikar, that may impact Magic: The Gathering's newest format, Pioneer! On October 21, 2019, Wizards of the Coast announced Pioneer, a new eternal, non-rotating format-- a "post-modern" format starting with Return to Ravnica. This format, likely a response to the price barrier of Modern and Legacy, would ban fetch lands (an expensive crux and format staple of Modern and Legacy) from the start, likely leading to a less expensive and therefore more accessible meta for new players and old, all while giving new life to a bunch of otherwise forgotten-about cardboard.
