WORLD'S MOST UNUSUAL CONCERTS: FUN KORA CONCERT IN SOMONE, SENEGAL This video is part of my World's Most Unusual Concerts series.
Hear the amazing African kora! The unusual kora harp is built from a small calabash or gourd cut in half and covered with a cow skin. The skin is supported by two handles that run under it. The kora has 21 strings and each string plays a different note.
The kora is unusual because it doesn't fit into any one category of musical instruments, but rather several categories. One might call it a "double-bridge-harp-lute".
The kora is played widely in West Africa. This video was shot at a small hotel in Somone, Senegal - about one hour outside Dakar, Senegal.
