1- They miss the horrible commute rush hour. This saves them time on the road to/from work. Note Software engineering is a very cerebral job. Engineers will often think of problem and design issues while they commute and even at home. It obsesses the good programmers and engineers. But, note, we do not get paid for this time. By coming in later, you get to leave after the horrible soul-sucking evening rush hour is over. Again . saving commute time.
2-Engineers like quiet work environments. Most annoying, unqualified and toxic employees work normal hours to keep up appearances. They leave at 4 or 5. This gives the Software engineer a few housr of peace and quiet at the end of the day to bust out code, fix applications and do a great job uninterruoted by these parasites that make working in an cube office soul suckinbg and horrible. We work off hours to avoid people and to GET THINGS DONE.
If you worked normal hours, engineers would be distracted in the non-productive cubicle open office environments. They are grabbed into useless meetings that could be handled one-on-one in 5 minutes at ones desk. but with cubes, everyone hears all and they interject their idiocy. Programmers hate people. And for good reason. Programmers are the ones that produce and deliver,. All others are there to support the engineers. But these people think the opposite. These are the sociopaths and think they can control programmers. They are wrong. A good engineer is in very high demand and makes more than any deviant manager. We are not divas, but we have options. So, leave us alone as we try to make something great.
The best solution for Software development is the Remote job. with today's collaboration tools like Slack, Skype, Cisco. There is no need to sit in an office with toxic people. Even security related job can be done remotely. Why? This is because it is the data that makes systems secure. Using dummy data, any developer shop can be done and managed remotely.
