An enormous alligator has been found by a group of hunters in the state of Georgia, likely setting a new record for the state. The reptile captured last Sunday weighed 700lbs and measured 14-feet and 1.74 inches in length, beating the previous record set in 2013. That alligator was 13-feet 10 inches long. Derrick Snelson, of Meriwether County, was out hunting on Lake Eufaula in the center of the state, with his 14-year-old daughter, Shelby, alongside professional hunters from Lethal Guide Service to help them. Around three hours after they set off in their boat, the hunters spotted the enormous reptile laying by a lily pad. 'None of us knew he was that big until it was over,' said Derrick. 'We just knew he had a nice-sized head on him. We started going toward him and he went under the water and stayed gone for 45 minutes before he surfaced right in front of us and went back under.' The game of cat and mouse went on for about five hours with the giant alligator only staying at the surface for around 10 seconds before diving back down for 45 minutes each time. That's the good thing of going with a guide service. They've already seen this happen. This is only my second time going gator hunting ever.' 'We finally got the big hook in him,' said Derrick to Georgia Outdoor News. 'Once we got him with the big rope, they pulled him up beside the boat, and I shot him with a crossbow bolt through the tail just to have him on a buoy in case he broke off, and we could tell where he went.'Derrick was able to finally kill the gator with a shot to the head using a 40-caliber Glock.'He was a mammoth, it was crazy to see something like that,' he said. Dereck says they plan to mount the alligator and eat him. The 700lb gator is not the heaviest alligator ever reported by a hunter, with 900lbs plus being the record, however it will likely go down as one of the longest hunter-harvested gator.
