Establishing Operations and Why it is Important in Dog Training (K9-1.com) Motivating operations (MO) are environmental variables that:

- alter the effectiveness of some stimulus, object, or event as a reinforcer,

- alter the current frequency of all behavior that has been reinforced by that stimulus, object, or event

MO can also be categorized into one of two defining effects:

- Establishing Operation (EO) - increases the current effectiveness of some stimulus, object, or event as reinforcement

- Abolishing Operation (AO) - decrease the current effectiveness of some stimulus, object, or event as reinforcement

When trainers practice "leadership" (controlling group activities) and "dominance" (controlling first right to limited resources) from an ethological point of view, they are also effectively ESTABLISHING OPERATIONS.
