The company announced the new Note 10 series at an event in Bengaluru at the Samsung Opera House. The Note 10 and Note 10+ are the company's newest flagship devices that succeed last year's Galaxy Note 9. This is the first time Samsung has launched two models in the Note series. The regular Note 10 differed from the Note 10+ in its screen size and battery. Apart from that, both the devices are nearly identical. The Note 10 series has been up for pre-orders for a while now, and will go on sale starting August 23. Before you decide to upgrade from the Note 9, there are a few key things that you should take note of.
Two models, new designs
As mentioned above, the Galaxy Note 10 comes in two different sizes for the first time. The regular Note 10 is more handy and compact as it sports a 6.3-inch display. One thing to note here is that Samsung has not only reduced the screen size, but has also downgraded the resolution from QHD+ on the Note 9 to FHD+ on the Note 10.
This has most likely been done to differentiate the Note 10 from the Plus-sized model. The Note 10+ is a souped up version of the regular model as it gets a bigger 6.8-inch screen and higher QHD+ resolution.
Both the Note 10 phones come with new curved Infinity-O Dynamic AMOLED displays with a centered punch-hole cutout. Compared to the Note 9, the bezels are even slimmer than before, offering a large screen real estate without increasing the footprint. The Note 10 devices are also slimmer at 7.9mm thickness.
Some changes
There are some changes to the Note 10 series that will require some getting used to. For one thing, the power button has shifted to the left side of the frame just below the volume keys. There is no physical fingerprint sensor on the back as the Note 10 and Note 10+ get ultrasonic in-display sensors much like the Galaxy S10 and S10+.
Another important aspect to note is that the Note 10 and Note 10+ do not come with a 3.5mm headphone jack, which means you can only use the Type-C port for wired audio connectivity or wireless earphones. Samsung will include a pair of USB-C earphones in the box to make the transition easier.
Faster, more efficient Exynos processor
The Galaxy Note 10 duo feature the latest Exynos 9825 SoC, which is based on a 7nm process. The new 7nm chipset will offer more efficiency and slightly faster overall performance compared to the Exynos 9820 processor that powers the Galaxy S10 phones. The chipset is also equipped with a dedicated NPU for advanced AI computation. Compared to the Exynos 9810 chipset that powers the Note 9, the Exynos 9825 boosts CPU and GPU performance by up to 33 and 42 per cent, respectively.
The Exynos 9825 is paired with 8GB of RAM in the case of the Note 10 and 12GB of RAM for the Note 10+. The vanilla Note 10 comes with 256GB of internal storage, which is twice the amount of the base variant of the Note 9. As for the Note 10+, you can buy the device with 256GB or 512GB storage.
It's worth nothing here that that the smaller Note 10 does not come with microSD card support for storage expansion, but the Note 10+ does. With the Note 10+, you can add up to 1TB additional storage via a microSD card.
New S Pen with Air actions
Of course, no Galaxy Note device is complete without the S Pen, and the Note 10 phones come with a redesigned stylus. The S Pen now has a unibody finish and a battery that can last up to 10 hours on a single charge. Last year's S Pen for the Note 9 came with Bluetooth LE that allowed the user to use the stylus as a remote to perform certain actions hands-free. This year's S Pen also comes with BLE, but with some added gesture-based controls to offer more ways to perform actions without touching the Note 10.
The new Air actions feature uses the S Pen's six-axis sensor to help you perform actions by flicking your wrist in the air. You can flick the S Pen up or down to change the camera mode from rear to selfie. You can rotate your hand clockwise or anticlockwise to zoom in and out or flick your wrist to manage music and videos.
More cameras
Samsung has added more cameras to its Note series. The Note 10 gets a vertical triple camera setup, while the Note 10+ offers a quad camera setup. The primary three sensors are the same on both the phones i.e a 12-megapixel primary sensor with variable aperture (f/1.5-2.4) and OIS, a 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens with OIS. In addition to these three sensors, the Note 10+ also gets a ToF (Time of Flight) camera that comes in handy for AR depth mapping
